Every piece starts as a lump of clay and a quiet morning.
I'm Ben MacDonald, and I make wheel-thrown stoneware pottery in my studio in Southern Pines, North Carolina.
Every mug, jar, bowl, and vase in this shop was thrown by hand on the potter's wheel — centered, pulled, trimmed, glazed, and fired to cone 6 (that's about 2,232°F) right here in my studio. There are no molds, no factories, and no two pieces that are exactly alike. The glazes I use are reactive, which means the kiln always gets the final word: drips, speckles, and color shifts form in the fire in ways I can guide but never fully control. That's the part I love most.
Why handmade?
A handmade mug does something a mass-produced one can't. It fits your hand a little differently. It has weight and warmth. It carries the marks of the person who made it — the throwing rings, the trimmed foot, the glaze that broke just so over the rim. When you drink your morning coffee from one, you're starting your day with something made with intention.
What you can expect
Every piece is food-safe, dishwasher-safe, and microwave-safe unless noted otherwise. I pack each order carefully in double-walled boxes with generous cushioning, because nothing should ever arrive broken.
